A Quick Chat with A.Skillz

06/02/14

When you think about the breaks scene, A.Skillz has got to be one of the first names that pops to mind. Having been monumental in the scenes growth, it’s his amazing technical ability behind the decks combined with a no-nonsense approach that has seen him rock shows the world over. He’ll be bringing his infusion of hip hop, jungle, breaks and everything that falls in between to Spectrum later this month.

Hi A.Skillz. Thanks for taking the time to speak to LWE. What have you been up to?
Just now? I just spent the last hour on the phone to N-power trying to sort out my faulty electric meter…

And what are your plans for the rest of 2014?
Hopefully I’ll be spending less time talking to electricity companies and more time making music!  These beats aren’t gonna make themselves.

Where outside of the UK do you most enjoy playing?
Australia is amazing, as is Canada and parts of America, but to be able to travel outside your own country to play music is pretty cool wherever you happen to be going.

And where is the place that you would least expect to have a decent breaks scene?
I’m pretty blown away at how good the scene is in parts of Romania. Cluj is amazing for gigs.

When your not in the studio or DJing what do you spend your time doing?
Changing nappies.

What’s the least glamorous thing that’s happened to you when DJing?
Someone once threw a bottle of what I can only describe as “warm yellowy liquid” in my general direction at a festival once.  That was really not the one.

What’s your best memory from behind the decks?
Hmm…. There have been a number of good memories.  I often reminisce of field day 2004 with Krafty Kuts and Kurtis Blow performing our version of Kurtis’ “The Breaks” – I was very young and it was a real ‘WOW’ moment for me. Having earlier that year been just playing in my local pub to suddenly standing in front of 20,000 people performing with a hip hop legend. I’ll never forget that.

If you could have any super power for 24 hours what would it be?
To freeze time –  So I could ‘freeze’ get loads done then ‘unfreeze’ and be like… I now speak fluent Japanese (or whatever)

Tell us something people might not know about you?
I’m a juicing enthusiast.

Favorite trainers?
My old Adidas Huf’s. Got them the day they were released from the Huf store in San francisco.  I wish I’d bought a few back up pairs, they are beyond knackered now.
