A Quick Chat with Calyx & Teebee

20/02/14

Fresh off the back of a US tour and with a new album on the cards, do Calyx & Teebee get anytime off? The answer is NO! Relentless in their approach, C&T are causing ripples across the whole of the globe with their incredible mixing ability and consistently scorching tracks. Back in the UK now, they’ll be one of the big draws to Shogun at Fire on the 25TH April. Expect heavy tunes, even weightier basslines and some of the most original bits of bass music to come out of the UK in years.  In and out of clubs and the studio, we were lucky enough to catch up with the hottest pairing in drum n bass right now.

Hey Calyx and Teebee. Thanks for taking the time to speak to LWE. We’re really looking forward to seeing you guys playing again at Spectrum and Shogun Audio in April!

-Yeah man, we’re excited as well. Love the venues you guys pick and always a great system – booming!

So, what have you been up to since we saw you down in Brixton?

-Ah where to begin…We did 3 continents in 9 days over New Year’s, plus we’ve been to America for the last two weeks, then all the usual up and down the country bits and Europe.  It’s pretty much been nonstop, but we’re not complaining!

What have you got planned for the rest of 2014? Any forthcoming projects or collaborations you can shout about?

-We’re deep into our 2nd album for Ram Records. Hard work, but it will pay off we hope! We’ve got some tricks up our sleeve with this one, but it’s too early to reveal specifics at this point. We’ll keep you posted when the time is right though!

Besides that, working on our 6 deck/3 mixers set. We feel we’ve taken it to another level the past 3-4 months so we’re excited about that too.

At what point in your careers did you decide to start making music together?

-As a full on duo it was 2007. We’ve been friends since 98 but the time felt right at that point in both of ours careers. The friendship was so strong we decided to make it a full time occupation as well!

What’s been your best memory DJing so far?

-Oh god.., where to start! We’ve had smashing experiences all over the world over the years, but it felt pretty special to step into Arcadia Stage at last years Glastonbury festival after Andy C with a crowd 40-50000 deep. That was beyond emotional.

When you are not in the studio or DJing what do you like to do to chill out?

-Chill out?! There is such a thing?!

Man, we have no time whatsoever. We are constantly worn out, but at the same time that’s a sign that things are going well!  We both love a bit of Table tennis (Calyx is slightly obsessed) and we both love skiing, so hopefully next year we can get some mountain festival bookings in the winter with added perks!

Out of all the RAM Records crew who can sink the most pints when you are on tour?

-Haha!  That,we would not really know… We’re usually “in’n’out” as we’re not in our 20’s anymore! I bet between Wilko and Frankee there would be some serious stamina going down though.

Favorite country abroad to play in and why?

-It’s impossible to narrow down to just one – simply because it varies from year to year. Russia has been great for ages, but so has Australia and the UK! We get so much love wherever we go and we are really grateful for that.

Your obviously playing the bigger capacity shows these days, but what has been your favorite ‘intimate’ gig lately?

-We did a Sunday in San Fransisco at Stamina Sundays the other night and the place was packed to the max, you could barely move! That was amazing and all the fans who brought records and CDs to sign and stayed out despite being off to work the next day . We felt special!

Tell us something we might not know about you?

-We sing to each other all the time in the studio with the most obscene lyrics !

5 producers you think we should be keeping our eye on this year:

-Brain Crisis , Hybris , Stealth , Teddy Killers , Boxcutter

Boom!
