Citizen has positioned himself as one of the most exciting young producers to come out of the UK in the last few years, and has picked up awards from the likes of DJ Mag to celebrate this. Hard to pidgeonhole, yet simultaneously distinct in his own sound; Citizen’s production always evoke a quality hedonistic vibe. He’ll be playing at Mixed January on 30th January alongside Ejeca, who is the other half of their new collaborative project Mountainking. Download a free track below…
What do you like most about playing in London? Are there any memorable moments you’ve had in the city?
London as a whole is teaming with this vibrant creative energy – the sheer quality of good parties out there has created this clued up and inquisitive generation of people who have read the press releases online and want to experience it in the flesh. I’m truly grateful to be a part of that scene, with so much talent being harboured and taxied through.
What is your favourite track/s to play out the moment? Are there any that get a big reaction from the crowd?
Loving the reaction I’m getting from my own track: Warehouse Flex at the moment as well as some oldies from Heads High and Tom Ellis doing the damage.
What can we expect from your new project with Ejeca (MOUNTAINKING)?
A much harder, refined sound that is very focused. I think it was important for us to distil everything that we have done in our careers so far into a more experimental and concept driven package. The First record is getting some really good reactions – we’re looking forward to promoting it in the coming weeks.
Why did you choose to collaborate with him on this?
We’ve been on each other’s radar for a while now and ended up playing a fair few shows together over the summer and we just got talking. The idea actually came when we were both up a mountain at Snowbombing (not skiing.)
Is there anybody else your collaborating with at the moment? If not, who would you like to collaborate with in the future?
I’d love to produce a hip-hop album for White Dee.
What can we expect from your alias ‘Citizen’ in 2015? Will we be seeing more releases in the near future?
A very special project that I’ve been working on for over a year that has JUST been finished actually. A new release with 2020Vision records with the homie Starving Yet Full on vocals also – as well as finishing up a few remixes and just generally staying busy and keeping out of trouble.
If you could describe your sound in 3 words what would it be?
Emotive, rudimentary, shape shifting
Which was your favourite set of 2014?
Without a doubt Carl Craig at the warehouse project opening party. Skill personified.
Do you have any new year’s resolutions?
Eat healthy, don’t live in the studio, be kinder to animals.
