We caught up with Yaya after what has been a top summer in Berlin for the Italian. As well as talking about the first Tobacco Dock NYD event, where he played a blinding set in room two, we also spoke about the forthcoming Pan-Pot show and the fact that he’s a ladies magnet!
Hey Yaya, thanks for taking the time to speaking to LWE. You have a good summer? What went down?!
After 11 seasons in Ibiza, I changed my programs and went to Berlin for this summer season. It was really good for me to do something different. I brought my studio to tINI’s home to make some music. I made 5 new tracks with my friend Lorenzo Chiabotti and 4 by myself. Normally I make 0 tracks in Ibiza! My season here is less frenetic than Ibiza, I listened to a lot of music different from my style, there are really cool records stores and I was so inspired to search for new music. It was a really positive summer!
Can you tell us a little bit about your musical background and how you got into DJing?
I started to play percussion with my father when I was 14 years old -he is a really good musician, he played for a long time in a band called M’bamina in the 1970’s so I’ve been into music since I was young- and when I was 17 I bought my first pair of turntables.
When you’re not behind the decks what do you spend most of your time doing?I spent most of the time in my studio making music but I’m also a good clubber so when I’m free I really like to go to listen other dj’s and party with my friends. I was 12 years old when I went to a club for the first time.
How did you end up meeting the Pan-Pot guys?
I met them in Berlin not long time ago, they are cool guys and I’m sure we will have a really good party in London !
What’s been your most memorable experience whilst DJing?
I was playing in a club and one girl came to me and give me her slip… I was looking at the girl a bit shocked and she says: read what I wrote with my red lipstick on my slip for you … “COME TO PLAY HERE”!
If you could describe you’re DJing style in 3 words what would it be?
Eclectic, versatile, energetic.
