Tweaking EQs, delivering dexterous displays on keys, caressing his drum machine and whispering sweet nothings to his synth. And all whilst having the time of his life! House, techno, disco, jungle and even ambient – as with his forthcoming release on Life&Death – KiNK excels at whichever genre he turns his hand to. That’s part of the reason he feels perfectly at home on a raft of labels, including Running Back, Cocoon, Permanent Vacation & Get Physical.
While other techno live acts can often be accused of being linear and mechanical, the same cannot be said of KiNK. When he’s on stage with his machines he radiates joyfulness. Joy which is reciprocated on the dancefloor. He might even let those at the front have a little fiddle on his Launchpad! It’s that connection – a relatable, human one – which energizes the room. It’s telling that he has topped Resident Advisor’s Live Act poll for the past two years.
As much as he’s a showman on stage, he’s equally as humble off it. Always keen to give something back to the electronic music community, he can regularly be found giving advice at seminars and online tutorials. It just further underlines his love for all kinds of music.
The show is constantly evolving. More facets are added as newer hardware become available. It means no two KiNK shows are the same. Stagnation is deadly, as they say. With his highly-anticipated studio album Playground out now – a body of work he describes as a “self portrait”, KiNK’s popularity is only headed in one direction. Strahil Velchev is an electronic wizard.
