It was almost twenty years ago today, that Rob da Bank opened the door on a cold wintry night in South London and about five shuffling red eyed clubbers and an old man and his dog pitched up to his first Sunday Best night. An after club for people who didn’t want to go home on a Sunday, but instead wanted to carry on the fun, make new mates and hang from a chandelier dancing to legendary DJs for the paltry sum of £1.99.
Sunday Best was born. Running for over 7 years every single Sunday, with Rob da Bank at the helm, welcoming DJs from all over the world. With a healthy resident roster of Andrew Weatherall, Basement Jaxx, Groove Armada, Lemon Jelly and DJ Harvey. The music policy was anything goes from dub to disco, leftfield pop oddities and the occasional barn dance number.
Sunday Best went on to spawn some seminal compilations before a record label Sunday Best Recordings that now boasts a roster including David Lynch, Kitty, Daisy and Lewis and was the seed that went on to become Bestival, Camp Bestival and that growing festival family.
‘I’m so chuffed to reuniting with Harvey again – he is the one DJ who was never scared about playing outside the box, breaking the rules and dropping everything from Elton to some weird greek record at the end of many a Sunday night. Our LEAF bash reunion should be pretty special.’
