Clive Henry talks to LWE

31/07/14

Having been on the circuit for some time, Clive Henry is well known for being part of Peace Division as well as one of the stand out members of the Crosstown Rebels crew. A regular at DC10 and a connoisseur of clubland, Clive is determined to show the new generation of clubbers just what he is about as he heads back into the studio after some time away from producing.

Hey Clive, thanks for taking the time to speak to LWE, what have you been up to?!

I’ve had a busy summer. Have played a few festivals including Sonar, Secret Solstice in Iceland, Glastonbury, & Secret Garden party which have all been amazing. Been back and forth to Ibiza a few times already for DC10 which has been mint. Also in the process of opening a studio with a little crew of us:Remi Marzet, FB Julian from Kubicle and one other close friend of ours who is itching to get involved. Which I can’t wait for its been way too long not producing and getting some music released… I miss that the most about my career :(

You’ve played in clubs all over the world, but what’s been the best experience you’ve had behind the decks, that really sticks out in your memory?

There’s been so many I couldn’t list them all.. I suppose my first time at DC10 (I know its a bit obvious!) Or Glastonbury in the Silver Hayes area on the Blues stage for Circo Loco. Absolutely ridiculous vibe playing to that number of people who were all on the same page musically. Or the first Rebel Rave on a beach near Lima Peru with Damian and Jamie which was unbelievable.

How would you describe your Djing style in three words:

Not relentless noise..

CLIVE

What are you most looking forward to about playing in the Tobacco Dock car park which will be transformed into a Rebel Rave?

That its gonna be a big event not far from my crib so no travelling involved haha. Seriously the line ups so good its should be one of the parties of the year..

You’ve been with the Crosstown family since day dot, what’s the best thing about that?

That there’s a togetherness that u get (or should get!) with most families… we all get on really well and have had some good times over the years.

What are you doing for the rest of your day?

Sleeping. And eating. Then sleep some more.

Any forthcoming releases on your label, or other projects you can shout about?

Like I said we have the studio opening which I’m buzzing about. Also looking forward to starting a label with Justin Drake that focuses on the history of Peace Division and our other projects ie Soul Purpose (yeh a few have sprung up over the years but we are the originals lol) that are all gonna get fresh remixes/updates. Which is exciting. There’s a new generation of clubbers that missed us the first time round so will be nice to show them what we were about and not just some old timers haha!  We are also looking to do the odd gig here and there together as have been getting some requests which is a bit strange but its nice to know people are still interested in us after all this time.

What have been the biggest influences on creating your own style behind the decks?

Hard to say really as I like to think I have my own style without having the need to take vibes from other people? I remember being transfixed by Carl Cox’s skills at Space a few years back… he did his three deck thing and was constantly manipulating/working the decks and mixer it was insane. Never seen a Dj work that hard for 6-8 hours… From a production viewpoint I suppose u could say Danny Tenaglia years back when we started producing as Peace Division.

Can you tell us something people might not know about you?

That once me and Daren Nunes from Dogmatik records appeared as Pete Heller’s keyboard players for his massive hit Big Love on Top of the Pops? Such a surreal moment of our lives we were laughing about it at The Secret Garden Party at the weekend when Daren pulled out the t-shirt they gave us after the performance! Can’t believe he has still got it after all these years..

If you could have any superpower for 24 hours what would it be?

Teleportation for sure. So I could get to and back from my gigs without the hassle of having to use airports. So much stress and too much grief 99% of the time..

5 producers we should watch out for?

MVMNT 222, Remi Marzet,Neil Parkes,Rowlanz,Rob Shields..
