Danny Daze will be making an appearance at LEAF After Dark, and we’re delighted to have him at the finale. Here’s a few quickfire questions we had with a man that is currently building a new studio in Miami and rediscovering his techno roots. You are just as likely to find him on centre court, or reading about the stars as you are to see him in the clubs!
Hey Danny thanks for taking the time to speak to LWE, where are you right now?
Just got to my place in Berlin. Had a nutty weekend in Tel-Aviv and Bucharest.
How was 2014 for you? What were the highlights?
2014 was a great year simply on the creative aspect. I was really able to push various sounds out which is what I’m about. My highlight had to be being able to release on what is one of the labels that has greatly influenced me since I started Djing in 99′ ….. Kompakt.
And looking onto 2015, what can we expect from you?
DD: I just released an EP on Omnidisc, next up got releases on Ellum, Kompakt and Ultramajic. I’ve also started a mix series I’ve been wanting to do for about 6 years called Sunday Morning which focuses more on the experimental side of music. You may also hear some of my experimental production on the catwalk, been scoring runway shows for my buddies out of Australia, “Song For The Mute”
If we were to walk into your studio right now, what would we see?
Dust, hacksaws, hammers and a bunch of wood. I’m actually building a new studio in Miami so my studio for the past couple of months has been a laptop and a couple tiny synths.
When not in the studio or out touring, what do you spend most of your time doing?
Reading about astrology. Circuit bending anything that makes noise. Tennis. Sleeping. Talking to mom. Searching eBay for full lots of headphone adaptors and computer chargers I know I’ll be losing in the near future.
What track would you use to save the party after a bad warm up DJ?
In all honesty, you can play anything by Moodymann and you can reset the party to where you want it to be. Unfortunately I’ve experienced this quite a few times.
What can we expect to hear from you in the coming year?
I’ve been going back to my experimental and electro roots so you may hear my music keep taking sharp left turns. This last release on Omnidisc is a good example of the variety of sounds I’ll be pushing this year. I’ve actually started making music under another moniker as well which I’ll be keeping secret.
Tell us something people might not know about you?
Not sure many people know, but my life consisted of tennis and only tennis before all of this. Trained 5 hours a day, competed every weekend.
Growing up in the US, was London much of an influence on you musically?
100%, a lot of great electro came out of London and would always wished I could visit every time I looked at the credentials of the records I would buy. Thankfully now I’m able to play in London quite a bit.
