We had a quick chat with Kiri & Kostas, the two brothers behind one of London’s most respected underground parties – rhythmatic. With 8 years of rhythmatic being celebrated at the moment, they are hosting a series of parties across Europe (and beyond). We spoke to the identical twins about their passion for putting on parties, their history and what the future holds.
They’ll be hosting room 2 at Building Six on 28th March for Cocoon and bringing in a special live set from Steve O’Sullivan, plus DJ sets from Daylomar and Andy Luff. On top of that Dorian Paic will bring some of the Cocoon heat into the room
So, when did you guys move to the UK? Did you start putting on parties straight away?
It was 10 years ago. Looking to start my career, having travelled around Europe, I felt I had to meet up with my twin brother after being a part for 8 years. He was living and studying in Newcastle at the time, and one day we decided to meet up in London and start living the big smoke dream!
We didn’t start straight away – We ended up going to Miami a couple of times and after being off the scene for 4 years, we decide to give it another go. We met up with EGG to present our ideas and then we end up hosting monthly events at EGG, Turnmills (RIP) and anywhere else we could find.
You’ve got 8 years of rhythmatic coming up, what have you got planned for that?
It has been a long journey and time has just gone so quickly! I can’t believe we are eight! A lot of interesting things are coming up, but let’s just say that this may be our biggest year yet.
When you first started out, who inspired and influenced you?
We weren’t a big fan of music at the beginning – I remember our sister used to listen to alternative music such as The Beatles, The Smiths and The Cure. We were always feeling so annoyed and had constant arguments about the music she was playing. However, it didn’t take me a long to start listening to the ‘new sound’ of electronic music and the big inspiration came from the likes of Suburban Base, Prodigy, Paul Oakenfold.
My first proper rave was when my twin Kiri took me to Middlesborough to see Paul Oakenfold at the Sugarshark club. I felt so in love….
While I was living in the Toon (that’s Newcastle) during my final year at uni, I decided to throw a party for all my friends and it ended up being a sell-out. It was hosted at the legendary Foundation and from there I decided to start organising parties. This was 14 years ago. Then I went on to putting various events in Newcastle, with Magpi events, Disco Noir, Untitled and then did his first Tour with Lexicon Avenue in Greece and Turkey, while he was living in Newcastle. My influences included Paul Oakenfold, Junior Vasquez, Frankie Knuckles & liquid is liquid.
What have been the top highlights for you guys over this time?
There are far too many to mention, but one has to be the first Festival we got involved with, which was the Summer Love Festival in Greece in 2004. We brought in the likes of Felix Da Housecat, Armand Van Helden, Adam Bayer, Dave Angel, Shinding, Sister Bliss plus many more.
What has been the most memorable party that you guys have done in London?
Kostas/Kiri After leaving our residency at EGG and throwing on that same year the first ever Warehouse party for rhythmatic at Hearn street where we brought together Davide Squillace b2b Matthias doing 4 hrs first ever back in 2010 in the UK, still for many clubbers one of the best parties…
And abroad – what has been the best location you have thrown a party in?
It was at Nice in France. We had been invited to host rhythmatic showcase in a beautiful location in the middle of nowhere… Thomas Melchior, Doubting Thomas and Archie Hamilton. It was just over two years ago.
Talk to us about some of the artists playing in your room at Cocoon on the 28th March?
Well, we are very excited to be part again of the Cocoon event in London. We have been given the freedom to choose our artists and program it the way we feel is ideal for rhythmatic. It is not always easy to do that when you get involved with such a super brand, but I guess they trusted our feelings and who can blame them! We believe the line-up speaks for itself – Dorian Paic, Steve O’Sullivan, Daylomar and Andy Luff. Our first collaboration, in November last year, was a great one and we managed to truly make a special occasion.
For this event we have decided to bring something that fits the rhythmatic ethos and music from the residents who always produce excellent sets. And some special guests…
Steve O’Sullivan has been on our radar for some time his energetic bouncy live set and is perfect for our this special collaboration with Cocoon.
