Introducing Kag Katumba – The newest addition to the 2020Vision family and the first DJ only artist on the label. Based in Leeds, Kag Katumba is event manager for 2020 and runs the music, cultural and lifestyle magazine called Movement. He’s given off that real summer flavour with this mix, and we’re hoping for more of the same at the 2020Vision party on 25.05.14 alongside Greg Wilson, Ralph Lawson, Citizen, Psychemagik, PBR Streetgang & The Reflex.
Hey Kag. Thanks for taking the time to speak to LWE! What have you been up to?
Well, I’ve been up to quite a lot recently now you ask. We kicked off the 2020Vision 20 years Content Tour in February at Fabric which was a really magical night. I’d only recently joined the label as an Event Manager when I had ideas of adding a visual aspect to the show. I knew a team of guys in Leeds called Loco who could bring my ideas of projection mapping to life. We came up with a rig made up of cubes that transforms when we put the projectors on them. The culmination of this project is called LocoVision.
What sort of style does this mix reflect, and are there any artists we should be keeping out eye on?
Well, when I did the mix the sun made an appearance along with the fact that our party is marathon going on through the day on the 25th. I thought mix to get everyone in the mood for the terrace action, was a good route to take. Ralph has compiled a mix of entirely new tracks from artists, old and new, on the label and putting them in one album called content. I’ve had a listen to all the tracks and there is great vibes coming from it throughout. Keep your eyes peeled for that as it is out very soon.
Tell us a little more about Movement Magazine, how it started, the ethos behind it and where you are today?
I started the magazine back in 2011 because I wanted there to be a free alternative print magazine that focused on the dance music scene in Leeds and further afield. There was nothing like that around anywhere in the country on my research, so off I went. We’ve been running in print and online ever since interviewing the likes of the late Frankie Knuckles, Kerri Chandler, Simian Mobile Disco and many many more. It’s been a great journey to date with our focuses moving more online due to that boring term “The Current Financial Climate”. To accommodate this we are redesigning our website to fit our focus on graphic design and functionality along with interesting content. Again this is something to keep on the look out for.
It’s been a while since 2020Vision have done anything in London, what can we expect from the party this May?
We’ve designed the event to have anything you would want to expect. By this I mean we’ve tried to step out side the confines of the usually all day events and you could even say we’ve gone to the lengths of putting on a mini festival. There will be headline acts playing throughout the day to offer the soundtrack to a great setting and food vendors dotted around to fill those stomachs. As the light fades the soundtrack will be changed to match the incredible LocoVision show I spoke about earlier. Apart from that it just going to be uplifting vibes for 16 hours straight.
If you could have any superpower for 24 hours what would it be?
I was actually having this conversation the other day with a friend. He said his choice would be flying which I think would be a good choice. Being the geek I am I said you’d need other powers to have with it like staying warm ha ha. I think I would have to say super intelligence so that my plans to take over the world would be made easier.
You’re one of only a couple DJ only artists on 2020, are you interested in getting into production?
I actually studied music production at University but I have to say that my real love comes with DJing. I feel that it is an art in it’s own right separate to being a producer. I would love to get back in to producing but I feel the other parts of my life may be neglected because of the amount of time and dedication it takes. Come back to me in a couple of years and I may have a different answer.
Where are we most likely to find you on a hot summers day?
If I’m not playing or “Working” at an event or festival you’d most likely find me at an event or a festival. On the occasions I’m not doing such things I love bbq days with friends, weekends away or a simple beer garden will suffice.
And finally what’s been your best experience behind the decks?
I think one of the best experiences I’ve had whilst djing came just last month where we did a secret special 2020Vision House Part in Leeds. We set up the LocoVision rig in an old manor house with myself and Ralph Lawson playing sets in this surreal intimate location. The atmosphere was incredible but I think my girlfriend would have something to say if I returned to a studentesque lifestyle.
