Kate Simko Preview

Hailing from Chicago, it was the house scene there and the techno scene in Detroit that were the early signposts towards a creative flare in electronic music. With a background growing up surrounded by classical music, she still keeps up with her passion for that, by remixing the likes of Philip Glass and her more recent project London Electronic Orchestra live. This has been in the works for many years and offers an experience which is all about transforming the melodies of synthesizers into lush orchestral moments, weaving through beats by Kate Simko…

Formed in 2013, the project features original music by Kate Simko, orchestral versions of electronic music, pop, and other genres, as well as collaborations with composers and DJs whose music is brought to life in a new way. The first LEO EP will be released in 2014 on Kate Simko’s new label, Black Book Recordings.

This documentary below is pretty old now (release in 2008) but it gives a fantastic insight into the life and early inspirations of Kate Simko and the musical pilgrimage she’s been on. It’s hard to think of other electronic producers that have managed to bring such an orchestral influence to their work, producing tracks that are just as suited to the living room as dancefloor.

Her debut album Light Out conveys a real understanding of the sonic possibilities available and how elements from electronic music can be arranged with more classical styled structures. Always allowing the key of her track to provid the backbones of apiece, she uses a combination of Ableton and Logic before mastering to allow for the mixdown she desires. The album covers a good range of music – electronic, house, minimal, and ambient – but maintains continuity throughout to create a bigger picture.

Whilst composing film scores, she still managed to rock jackin’ DJ sets, with her real love in producing her own melodic, Chicago-flavoured take on house and techno. Having made London her base for the last few years now, we’re going to give her an extra big welcome to Summer In The City on 9th August. She’ll suit the vibe of the Percolate room perfectly.

Check out Seth Troxler‘s new remix of Hercules and Love Affair .where Kate Simko recorded the amazing string parts in New York City last month. We love this tune, proper summer jam!!
