Lets Be Friends Interview

With the highly anticipated return of Spectrum to London later this month, we’re exploring some of the artists that will be playing at one of the original “eclectic” club nights. With no boundaries musically, Spectrum has embraced the cross pollination that is now reflected on many dance-floors across the globe.  Here’s a short interview with Lets Be Friends who are making waves on the international scene with their unorthodox sounding beats. Hard to label or pigeonhole into one particular category the duo have picked up support with some of the biggest names in EDM, with Afrojack, Steve Angelo and Steve Aoki making up the large list.

Hi LBF, hope you guys are good, and had a decent start to 2014?
Jonney – Yeah, Its been so good. I don’t think we could have hoped for better
Oren – All great… looking forward to the rest of 2014

So, you guys formed in 2013 – Can you tell us a little more about the band and how you got together?
Jonney – Well, we met touring the underground trance circuit a few years back as separate projects and quickly realised we had the same goals in life (high speed Limo rides & 1st class VIP life!) We both wanted to take what we were doing to an international level and explore what is possible with music and design I suppose.

How would you describe the sound that you guys have developed, and what have been the biggest influences on this?
Jonney – Our sound is really aimed at keeping people ‘moving forwards’ either on a dance floor or in listening mode. Quite loud and strong but fun. Growing up listening to The Prodigy shaped us massively as an attitude, And also the likes of Pendulum & Knife Party have been a huge influence on us sonically.

Oren – “FULL FLAVOR” Our influences come from music we liked when we grew up like Metallica, Radiohead and The Prodigy and from music that we learn to know  what we like with the years like Justice and Pendulum and many more.

What has been the best memory you have had when performing?
Jonney – Just had a great one now in Cologne, Germany… Arrived to a club of 800 people dancing and it felt like a STADIUM when we left… was absolutely heaving… but Brixton Academy in November takes it!

Oren – Don’t know about “best ever” but I can name one or two like the Knife Party “Haunted House” at The Brixton Academy and the Global Gathering NYE party at Birmingham 3 weeks ago when we played the countdown spot.

Any forthcoming releases, or other projects for 2014 you can tell us about?
Jonney – We have a release this Monday coming called FTW! A very strong electro track coming out on Monstercat Records and some plans involving some of London’s own biggest dance acts and even a ‘Speed Garage’ revival, and all before the summer- some really nice stuff coming!

Support the track here on beatport:

Oren – LBF is the project and we have a lot of new releases for the next few months… We are gonna push the limit more and more trying to achieve the best positive full flavour music for our #ArmyOfFriends and fans all over the world and slowly start to meet them in person on our tours and gigs.

Let’s Be Friends – FTW (Original Mix)

Top 5 favorite tracks at the moment?

Zedd – Find You (feat Mathrew Koma & Miriam Bryant)
Banks – Brain
Deorro – Unspoiled Perfection (feat Madeleine Jayne & Adrian Delgado)
Pegboard Nerds – Baseline Kickin
Quintino & MOTi – Dynamite Ft. Taylr Renee (Yellow Claw Remix)

Skrillex & Alvin Risk – Try it out (Neon Mix)
Disclosure – You & Me
Gesaffelstein – Pursuit
Arctic Monkeys – Do I Wanna Know
Katy Perry – Roar

If you could have any super power for just 24 hours what would it be and what would you do?
Jonney – Mind Control! No Brainer (pffff)
Oren – Time jumper – aoooooo… Forget it! I will do a lot!

When you’re not in the studio what do you guys spend most of your time doing?
Jonney – Watching The Ricky Gervais Show and perfecting my (pretty much) perfect Chicken & Potato recipe.

Oren – Pretty normal TV and stuff like that… You knowwhen you’re busy creating the whole day long its important let your mind go when you’re out of the studio.

If you could collaborate with any other artist who would it be?
Jonney – System Of A Down or just their Lead Singer Serj Tankian. WOW! Best voice ever.

Oren – mmmmmm… I’ll name 3 –  Liam Howlett, Alex Turner and Rob Swire.

Tell us a little more about what we can expect from you guys at Spectrum on the 28th February.
Jonney – Tonnes of tracks, anything goes style wise but mostly big tracks that unify the dance floor. Or at least that’s the plan.

Oren – Around 100 tracks per hour – not kidding… You’re more than welcome to count!
It’s always good to be back on our home field.
