The French/US duo, Benoit & Sergio, met at an after party in Berlin. It wasn’t long before their signature combination of rich synth work combined with pop influenced lyrical magic and impressive songwriting had been released on labels such as Spectral Sound, DFA, Visionquest, Hot Creations and Culprit. Ahead of their live set at Tobacco Dock on New Year’s Day we caught up with Sergio and asked him if he had any New Year’s resolutions.
Hey Sergio. Hope you are well. What have you been up to – did you have a good end to the summer?
The end of summer was a blur of shows and deadlines…. so yeah, it was good.
What has been the most memorable experience for you guys behind the decks in 2014?
There were a lot of nice ones and of course ones you want to forget. In recent memory the most special was playing in Sri Lanka at this party on the ocean. Felt like a virgin, touched for the very first time.
If we were to walk into your studio now what would we see?
You would see an empty shell and boxes. The lease for Berlin space runs up in a couple weeks, so it’s time to find something new.
You’re playing a live set at LWE NYD. Can you tell us a little more about your set up etc?
Drum machine, synths, microphone, laptops, and the ferocious energy of a jungle cat.
When you’re not touring where do you spend most of your time?
We are always touring. During the week in the spring and summer it’s Berlin and Rome, then we just bounce around during the rest of year like migrant workers, journeymen.
If you could describe your own style in 3 words what would you say:
Bounce cat paradise.
What are you most looking forward to about playing at Tobacco Dock on New Year’s Day?
Being in London (one of our favourite cities, with our favourite crowds) and a line up made of really good friends.
Any New Year’s resolutions?
To talk on the phone more and text less.
