Eric Estornel is part of a select group of producers that have simultaneously succeeded under two production aliases within varying avenues of electronic music. This is a testament to the amazing levels of output that he achieves when in the studio, or touring the world with one of his hugely engaging DJ sets. Captivating the headlines and heat lately with his sexier Maceo Plex façade, this February London will get the rare opportunity to hear the much loved darker sounds of Maetrik.
With the success he’s achieved under Maceo Plex over the last year, and the fanbase he’s tapped into, it would have been easy for him to put to bed Maetrik. But for the man behind it all, the mask of Maetrik allows him to express the more mysterious and murky side of his musical brain.
“When I play as Maetrik I get super dark and intense. Not just in your face techno, but a certain intensity to the set that is much more sinister. I’ve been playing as Maetrik for a lot longer than Maceo Plex, so I feel right at home dropping sci-fi stuff on that ass. (Mixmag May, 2013)”
Just listen to one of the many sets of Maetrik on youtube, to hear how he crafts out his sets with like a piece of Middle Eastern Tapestry. Reaching the crowd on so many levels, with his inviting approach of mixing the deep with the harder more-techier sounds has built him a formidable reputation across the globe.
Within the current era of house and techno, Eric’s refreshing method of releasing music in this way has allowed him to create two personas, cross-pollinating into different realms of the subgenres. Hard to pidgeonhole to one particular sound, the productions and DJ sets of Maceo/Maetrik’s style epitomise what is meant my originality. Adding nuances from a wide range of sonic influences to create a border crossing quality that both of these alter egos embrace.
