LEAF once again teams up with Jersey’s cutting-edge Branchage Film Festival to present ‘Beats On Film’, a programme of films portraying or examining defining stages in the evolution of dance music. Each film will be accompanied by Q&As featuring special guests musicians, DJs and filmmakers who will discuss the themes of the films.
The screenings will take place on Friday 6th and Saturday 7th March at Whitechapel’s Genesis Cinema, which last year celebrated its 15th birthday. ‘Beats On Film’ features the following events:

Peter Strickland’s new film had its UK premiere at London Film Festival 2014 and showcases the final performance of Bjork’s much-celebrated and hugely innovative and ambitious Biophilia tour. The screening will be followed by a panel talk featuring guest producers, musicians and tech experts, looking at the changing role of technology in modern music production and performance, and casting an eye on the innovations that may lie ahead.

1984’s Beat Street, along with its 1983 predecessor Wild Style, is credited as being one of the very first movies to bring rap music, DJing, street art and breakdancing to the big screen. Featuring stars of hip hop Afrika Bambaata and Kool Herc, the film is revered as a cult classic over 30 years later. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with legendary British turntablists and former DMC team champions Scratch Perverts, who will be joined by other guests and authorities on hip hop to discuss the genre’s role in the evolution of DJing in the 1980s, through technique and technology.

A 2007 documentary examining the life and work of electronic music pioneer and inventor of ‘Musique Concrete’, followed by a Q&A with arguably Britain’s most important electronic music pioneers, the iconic Radiophonic Workshop, who feature in one of the two supporting short films, The Delian Mode, about the Workshops’ legendary Delia Derbyshire. Also showing on the night is the award-winning short The Secret World of Foley, which premiered at London Film Festival in October 2014.
