LWE Mix 227: Ceri

Which artists would you love to book for a night?

Oh! Too many to mention, although I already did that with Lakuti and Paranoid London last summer, who are my absolute FAVES, I love how Lakuti brings the soul and deep funk and rawness, and Paranoid's Acid rhythmic phatness. I love all shades of House and Techno, for me it's about the soul and the groove and intertwining and going on a musical journey. I like to build musically, with a variety of styles, rather than just have 3 people who play very similar sounds.

Other artists I would love to book would be Moodymann, Moxie, Midland, Bradley Zero, and of course Zombies in Miami, Dee Diggs, Cici and Paul Rayner, who all just remixed my latest track!

Tell us about your Amnesia MIx for us?

The mix is a live recording of my set from Amnesia for you guys vs Pyramid  last summer. I love Junction2 and Pyramid, so what a divine pairing! I made my Junction2 vs Pyramid debut the year before alongside an amazing line up of Barry Can't Swim, Kerri Chandler, Ben UFO, Honey Dijon, Dax J, Nina Kraviz which was an amazing night, so thanks for having me back.

The mix is a Live recording of my set on the Terrace, starting off nice and deep, then you can hear it building as the room gets busier. It's one of my favourite places to play, because being on that dancefloor myself was one of my biggest inspirations to start DJing and making music myself. It took some turns that I might not have done if I was just recording a mix at home, because I felt and moved with the energy of the crowd, so I hope you can feel that energy when you listen too!

It features old, new, and forthcoming, tracks from; Inland Knights, The Trip, a WORLD EXCLUSIVE first ever play of my release for Fred P's new label coming out next year, the Paul Rayner remix of my track 'Don't You Wanna', some secret aliases. A journey through all shades of Deep, Classic and 90's house, with a little Garage flavour thrown in for good measure of course 😜.

What’s your process for finding new music?

Probably unofficially diagnosed ADHD, which I see as a gift. I love getting lost going down rabbit holes and going on a journey. I find a track I like, check out what labels they are on, who else are on those labels, and that can send me down a day, week, or even months of digging and discovering new music. I also love to dig in record shops too when I get the chance, as well as finding gems in charity shops. I love old music, not because it's 'old', but because it's timeless. If a track was made in the 80's and is still being played today, you know it's good. Whereas a lot of today's music is made to be more disposable, which doesn't interest me. I want to still love it in 10 or even 20 years time. And most of my tracks I've had for many years I still love to this day.

How would you describe Ibiza to someone who has never been?

That feeling when you step foot in a place, and you feel like you belong, you feel like you are 'at home'. And that home could be anywhere, from the beach, to a club, up a mountain, in a fancy restaurant, or eating at a shack on the beach. It's really hard to describe in words, because it is more of a feeling. I love to have one foot in the rave and one foot in the spiritual and nature side. Ibiza encompases all the different sides of me.

What is one piece of advice you would give to your younger self?

Learn how to say no. Learn how to listen to your Intuition. If i'd had learnt that earlier life would have been much easier, but that is how we learn and grow...

What is one production tip you wish everyone knew?

Parallel EQ. I love it! Especially on a percussion group. It brings everything to life, adding extra vibes, making it sound much warmer and phatter. Maybe I should do a video on this!

What’s one genre of music you love we would be surprised to learn about?

The first piece of music I ever bought was a Reggae compilation tape when I was eight!

I love all styles of music outside of House and Techno. I was an old school garage raver as a teenager, and I also love, and can do a soul, funk, gospel, disco, jazz, electronica, ambient, eclectic set when the mood strikes, and have a few reggae bits too. House Music has so many influences, I don't trust any House Music DJ's who don't also know about the History coming from Disco. And I get a lot of inspiration for my music from other genres too.

What never leaves your bag while you’re traveling and playing?

I was going to say my Sage / Palo Santo to cleanse the energy. But I assume you're talking about records, so record wise, Mr. G, Fred P, K-HAND (rip), Paul Rayner all make amazing music and are some of the few artists who I have dedicated playlists to.

What other releases do you have coming up?

I just had a track out on fabric Records, and I am really excited to have a track coming out on Fred P's new label soon too. I just did a remix for Chez Damier, and also planning even more releases on my label with everything from Minimal House, to House and Techno and even my first time working with a Gospel Singer! I love to showcase all the different styles I love.
