In today’s At Home With takeover we take a deep dive into the world of East London-based duo, Warren Cummings and Joe Danvers aka Kassian.
A partnership formed in 2018 after a chance meeting at a record store, their wide-ranging influences were brought together by a mutual love of house and electronica, where the pair made an instant mark with a Track Of The Year nominated debut EP, ‘The Promise’, on Detroit Swindle’s Heist Recordings. Following up with standout releases on Phonica White, Groovence as well as their own Kassian Versions vinyl only imprint, the dynamic duo are quickly carving out a reputation as one of the top names on the scene.
Featured in their selections are DJ Deep, Ben UFO, Youandewan, Leon Vynehall, Michael Pollen, Rick Rubin and RZA.
Joe: A gorgeous mix from St. Germain on WWFM. Absolutely perfect for lockdown.
Warren: This is a live recording of the first part of Ben UFO playing the Selectors stage at Dekmantel Festival 2014. It was so uplifting after a heavy night at Trouw and listening back to it takes you right back to that afternoon, a close second would be Maragart Dygas’ early morning set at Houghton 2018.
Joe: We’ve been huge fans of Youandewan since we started producing together, he’s been a big influence on our sound since day 1. Love how confident and simple both the ideas in this EP are, it’ll be worth the wait when we get to play these out somewhere.
Leon Vynehall’s Music for the Uninvited really changed our idea of what a dancefloor LP could sound like. Masters at Work’s 10th Anniversary is up there with favourite dance LPs too.
Joe: A friend bought this for me recently, it’s about the history of hallucinogens and what they teach us about consciousness. I’m only at the start but it’s worth it just for reading about how acid was discovered.
There’s a podcast series by Malcom Gladwell and Rick Rubin called ‘Broken Record’, it’s just Rubin chatting openly with some legendary musicians like RZA, Andre 3000, Alicia Keys. There’s no agenda or topics, each episode is fascinating.
