Junction 2: Connections Recap

Fri 15th Jan

3 iconic cities and 20 artists, brought together under one roof, J2v. Not bound by rules or gravity, distance or capacities, Saturday 9th January saw our second foray into the digital events space and we can honestly say the response has been humbling.

After such a testing 2020 for us all it was overwhelming to see the global community unite in the new year over our shared passion for music. It was a global event far beyond our expectations and one that we will never forget. If you missed your chance to donate, you can still do so via the button below.

We recap on all the action from Saturday and look forward to the New Year with a promise of some huge news on the horizon.

Since the birth of electronic music, 3 key cities have been pivotal in establishing the global scene we have today; Berlin, Detroit and London. 3 Meccas, so vastly different and yet so indistinguishable in their impact. They remain amongst the cornerstones of the scene and a huge influence on the sound of Junction 2.

To pay homage to our roots, Junction 2: Connections was set up to bridge the gap between these distant strongholds and bring them together for a one-off digital broadcast. 20 of the world’s finest house and techno artists would stream from striking and untouched locations across the three cities for a truly unique event.

Kicking off with The Speaker’s Corner, the pre-event countdown featuring exclusive panels and providing thoughtful and much needed discussions about the future of our industry. There were artist Q&As with Daniel Avery, HAAi and Mount Kimbie as well as an exclusive behind the scenes look at the setting for the London of the stream. Resident Advisor’s acclaimed docuseries, Real Scenes, rounded off the show with a deep dive into the three iconic cities, setting the stage for what was to come.

As the doors to Junction 2: Connections sprung open, streaming across social networks, Beatport, Rinse FM radio, Asphalt 8: Airborne and Asphalt 9: Legends mobile games, the Junction 2 hub and the J2v virtual world, the event was broadcasting across these platforms and to dozens of countries. The Junction 2 Hub acted as the epicentre for uninterrupted streaming while our virtual world provided an immersive digital playground beyond the wireframes of the videos. Reinvented with new stages, avatars, collectables, streaming modes and more, our bespoke world was once again heaving with real life spirit. A global community, connected under one roof and united in a singular passion for underground music.

Three bespoke stages of J2v provided a portal between the real world and the virtual. The Console, in association with Relentless Energy Drink, housed the London leg. The Hex, in association with Nordic Spirit, was home to Detroit, while The Vault was transmitting sets from the TV Tower overlooking Berlin.

Partnering for the streams with leading audiovisual artists More Eyes, the kaleidoscopic attack on the senses began with incredible opening sets from burgeoning stars Ash Lauryn, Terr and Peach. There were otherworldly sonic odysseys from Dixon and Seth Troxler and an extremely rare outing from John Collins and Mark Flash of Underground Resistance. A multilayered B2B barrage from Daniel Avery and HAAi and a dystopian escape from Rødhåd. A full throttle DJ set from Mount Kimbie preceded the minimal masterclasses from Ben Klock and Robert Hood. Showcasing the diversity of the UK’s vast and varied sound was iconic leftfield trio, Hessle Audio, before the reins were passed to superselector from down under, DJ BORING, to provide the encore with a very special closing set.

This unforgettable event would not have been possible without the ongoing support of our community so from everyone at Junction 2, we want to say a massive thank you to all of you who tuned in, listened, engaged with the world and created an atmosphere that we will never forget.
