Sphere 002: The RecapTue 25th Feb
Last Saturday we welcomed house and techno royalty Maceo Plex and Marcel Dettmann to another packed out crowd at Magazine. With the 80mph winds of the past weekend behind us, we were finally able to bring the full 360 degree Sphere experience to life. An incredible day of non-stop action was kicked off by a flawless opening set from Raxon, before rising stars Anastasia Kristensen and Matrixxman set the stage for the ever-brilliant Marcel Dettmann with an eclectic plethora of grooving house and shaking techno. Light shows, ray beams and steam cannons were out in full display as Maceo Plex transcended us into the future with the closing set of the night.
With the full production out in full display, the behemoth 10,000 sq ft black box was fully transformed into an immersive rave space from the future. Resembling an alien spaceship beam blasting out of the sky, 5 huge platform columns encapsulated the dancefloor with pinpoint light rays shooting out across the venue. The main stage was engulfed by a mega-arch of light displays cascading out into the crowd perfectly in sync with the crystal clear, earth shaking, euphoric barrage that was blasting out of the top of the range L-Acoustics sound system.
Long-time record collector and a true DJ’s DJ, Raxon kicked off the proceedings with a stellar selection of stripped back, welcoming and melodic techno, setting the bar as high as it gets for what was to follow. Rising star Anastasia Kristensen and techno futurist Matrixxman then got the dancefloor sweating with a blend of infectious, playful and bold selections ranging from feel-good house to pummelling rave infused acid techno.
Enigmatic Berghain mainstay and contemporary techno pioneer Marcel Dettmann’s appearance was greeted with a huge uproar of excitement and anticipation. True to his unequivocal reputation, the German maestro delivered one of the stand out sets of the night. From the weird, to the obscure to the undeniably groovy, in a set that was as smooth and intricately woven as you’ll ever hear, Marcel showed off once again why he’s one of the most highly touted selectors in the game.
The day party reached its climax once Maceo Plex took over the decks. Cheered by a packed out crowd of party goers, the atmosphere inside the room resembled that of a Saturday closing set under the bridge at Junction 2 festival. Thumping out of the speakers was a range of big-room techno, classic Maceo edits and unheard of exclusives from the top dog himself as every inch of the box was shaking in sonic and visual chaos. From build up to drop, the spellbinding light show and blasting steam cannons engulfed the place in a frenzy of constant tension and release as the immersive, other-worldly and transcending Sphere experience was felt in full effect.
